ABOUT KEVIN CHANOT
From a long line of violin makers
Kev's background
I am proud to be following in the footsteps of my illustrious ancestors.
Originally I enjoyed a successful career as an antique furniture restorer and during this time I started researching the origins of my family’s violin making tradition.
My great grandfather Frederick William Chanot, a violin maker & music publisher had premises at 73 Berners Street,London. This was where my grandfather Francis Wilhelmj Chanot was born in 1895.
His middle name was taken from the famous German violinist who was in London at that time and who was a client of George Chanot's.
Over 20 years ago, based on my research and skills in restoring antiques, I started making my first violins. At first it was on a part-time basis whilst still running a busy restoration workshop.
After a few years of raising a family and several house moves the decision was taken to make violins full time.
My instruments are all made by me, in my own workshop in Devon. Each violin takes many hours of love, patience and skill. I select the best materials and make my violins by hand in the traditional manner.

VIOLINS - FAQs
Q&A for buying and owning an artisan violin
What are your violins made from?
My violins are made from spruce (a soft wood) on the front, and the back and neck are made from maple, which is a hard wood.
I source my woods from a specialist supplier, the woods are well seasoned for many years. Quality is of utmost importantDo you have violins in stock that I can buy?
Yes, there are usually two or three instruments in stock and available to buy. Please contact me to discuss
Why would I buy a Chanot Violin?
A Chanot violin takes at least 100 hours to make by hand. The focus is on quality and craftsmanship. I select the best woods and materials and each instrument is individual and unique.
Are your violins for collectors, players or an investment?
These are artisan produced instruments, which are made to be played. Although they look beautiful, they are not just ornamental.
How do I care for my violin?
Always keep it in an appropriate case whilst not in use, and away from heat, moisture, extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
Never use solvent, just a dry cloth is sufficient, clean off rosin build up under the bridge.
Check the bridge is kept upright.
